They haven’t intentionally left out that information. They aren’t deliberately trying to keep you trapped in your time wasting ways. It's just that they don’t know the REAL reasons either. They may not be aware either that there are deeper, hidden components behind why you’re not more productive.
That’s why I want to talk with you about why you do these behaviors. Specifically I want to help you discover the 4 biggest time wasters you do probably everyday without realizing it. Then I want to share with you the REAL reasons why you waste time and procrastinate and stay unfocussed, because if you don’t understand where your behaviors are coming from, tools you learn probably won’t take hold. Only once you know the REAL reasons why you do it that you will quickly and easily start taking action and no longer go back to your old habits.

Some of your biggest time drains have little to do with what you typically hear are the explanations for time wasting. Your time wasting has only a little to do with exerting your willpower. Your procrastination has only a very little to do with fear of failure. There are actually 4 explanations for why you waste time, but for now I want to go over with you the 2 explanations that account for a significant portion of the time you wasted this week.
Time Wasting Explanation #1: There are psychological motivations programmed from early on that lead to some of your biggest time wasting behaviors. You do them for a good reason. These very things that you are doing “right” are limiting your potential the most. But once you learn the motivations behind these behaviors, you will no longer leave it up to your willpower anymore and you will know how to move quickly towards the success you hoped for at this point in your life.

Time Wasting Explanation #2: Your level of confidence determines the mental and emotional reactions you have to unpredicted situations, particularly the way that you take things personally and get derailed by your responses to other people’s actions and the stresses of when things don’t go as expected.
I call these time wasting internal reactions “Hidden Drains”, because you barely even notice you do them. They secretly deplete you of your time and energy – they sneak in and take up “mindshare” without you even realizing it – the worst part is that then you never even have a fighting chance to control them.
From listening to hundreds of people talk about their Hidden Drains, I have learned 3 things:
First, the most successful people I knew didn’t have them.
Second, what happens is that you tell yourself you ‘need to focus’ and ‘need to get more done’ in your outside world, but what you are REALLY spending your time thinking and talking about have much more to do with your reactions inside. These reactions have to do with the way you take things personally and get stuck being upset with other people These reactions have to do with the way you take things personally and get stuck being upset with other people.
Third, (and this might be one of the most relieving things you ever hear, I know it was for me!): YOU ARE NOT ALONE. In fact, let me give you some examples I heard just this week from my clients about their Hidden Drains (I even asked them to guestimate how much time it took up each day). See if you relate to these:
- “As soon as an email comes in I feel like I need to respond to it right away or else they will think I am falling down on the job. Or else they will think I don’t think they are important. So I like to respond right away even if I have more important things to do to grow my business” (time wasted: on average 5-15 minutes)
- “I daydream about doing something I’m more passionate about. Then I start going into the “what ifs” and immediately think of the reasons why it won’t work, such as “I don’t have the right experience for that”; “I can’t get health insurance doing that”. I spin my wheels, then I just put it in the back of my mind. Until something again reminds me that I really want to do something different, such as when I go out to dinner with friends and they ask me what I’m up to and I have to sheepishly report I am still doing the same thing”. (time wasted: on average 45 minutes over the course of the day)
- “I got an email from my boss asking to meet with me about progress on the big project, obsessed over it the whole weekend thinking I hadn’t done ‘enough’ and then spent all Saturday over-preparing to make sure I would look good in the Monday meeting” (time wasted: my whole Saturday afternoon)
- “Had a difficult interaction with a client, and I kept replaying it in my mind thinking about what I did wrong; I couldn’t get to sleep over it” (time wasted: 20 minutes before sleeping)
- “Spend so much time doing nice things for my family member and I was hoping they would at least thank me for it, but they never did. I didn’t get the ‘feel good’ I was hoping for but I keep doing it in the hopes that one of these times they will show me love and appreciation I crave” (time wasted over the last ten years: countless numbers of hours)
- “I know that I really want to spend more time developing my new idea and send it out to my clients and colleagues. Whenever I look at the pile of things I need to organize in order to think about it, I just get deflated. I think that other people won’t be interested or that they will think my ideas are stupid. I imagine that it will take so much work for me to get it all organized. So I just surf the net and leave for another day” (time wasted: 30-60 minutes of procrastination)
- “I have a difficult client (or assistant, or boss, etc.) in my life. I waste so much time thinking about the situation, playing it over and over in my mind - blaming them for being so aggravating; talking to them in my mind telling them how they ‘should’ act differently; wishing that they would just finally see what I need from them and show me appreciation”. (time wasted: on average 30 -60 minutes a day)
- “I got a flaming email back from someone I sent out an email blast to. It hurt my feelings and I sat there wondering: “why did they say those things to me?” (time wasted: 10 minutes)
